The 10th anniversary of the publication of the "Holy Bankruptcy" article in the Italian newspaper "L'Espresso" on January 20, 2011, was why some Slovenian media reported again on the events in the Archdiocese of Maribor ten years ago.
Among others, the former economist of the Archdiocese of Maribor, Mr Mirko Krašovec, spoke to the media, giving his views of the events. We believe in the good intentions of Mr Mirko Krašovec and support his activity insofar as it contributes to an objective understanding of the situation and the role of the Archdiocese of Maribor in the otherwise complex, challenging situation in which the Archdiocese of Maribor found itself at the time.
On the other hand, we must follow the old rule that no one can be a (final) judge in his or her case. We must distance ourselves from some of his views, especially so in the opinions that are still in the research process and cannot be taken as definitive.
We are especially grateful to the Diocese of Graz and the Holy See for their support in rescuing us. Through the Congregation for the Clergy, Pope Francis has personally advocated for a solution to the difficult situation. Throughout the crisis, we have felt the support of the Holy See. We hope that the rescuing of the Archdiocese of Maribor will be accelerated and successfully continued.
Maribor, June 21, 2021
On behalf of the Archdiocese of Maribor
Msgr Alojzij Cvikl, Metropolitan Archbishop
